What A Good Food Safety Consultant Can Do for You?

  • Improving compliance, reducing the risk of recalls, and increasing customer trust.
  • They can help address common food safety issues such as cross-contamination, improper storage, and inadequate training.
  • Offer training for the food safety team to ensure the staff understands food safety risks and ways to mitigate food safety risks

Now, let’s talk about how we can help you with your food safety plan.

What is A Food Safety Plan?

A food safety plan is like a blueprint or framework that helps us understand the food that we make, including inputs, processes and outputs, and their food safety hazards. This blueprint will also outline how we can control and prevent food safety hazards from becoming a source of illness or injury to consumers.

A common framework we follow is the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) frameworks that enable us to follow a systematic process to determine if the risks are controlled.

There are many different types of food safety plans. Just to give you a heads up if you are not working with these food safety plans regularly, you might get confused. So, I would recommend that you know the name to start with. And then work with your consultants to understand the differences. We teach our clients the differences between each of these plans.

Ready?

You have the basic HACCP plan, the CFIA-based Preventive Control Plan and the US FSMA Preventive Control Plan. As well, you have BC food safety plan for the restaurant.

They can be developed from similar concepts but have different formats and structures. So, they are almost the same but different.

Working With Food Safety Consultant to Prepare Food Safety Plan Advantages

My client’s favourite reason for us developing their food safety plan is they don’t need to scratch their heads doing all the researches that get them more confused than at the beginning of the food safety plan development.

That said, good food safety consultants know how to write and what key questions to ask when developing the program with their clients. This allows proper documentation of the risk assessment (with client involvement) while keeping the confusion away from the client.

Remember that a good food safety consultant always asks the client to review and verify the food safety plan.

Preparation for a food safety plan alone isn’t enough. The food safety plan must be verified and validated on-site. Monitoring, record keeping verification and validation records must be kept.

Common Question For Food Safety Plan Preparation

If you are not on-site, how do you know about the process and risks?

We work with our clients to understand the processes as well as past experiences and training/education sessions that we went through, assisting us to picture the hazards associated with the process.

What do I need to do as the client?

As an SFPM client, you will need to provide information about your input materials, processes, and facility map and verify the food safety plan once they are ready.

Can I build a food safety plan and then get you to review them?

Yes, certainly, but we typically find that reviewing food safety plans costs more time and costlier than when we build them. This is because we have to go through them one by one hazard and review them to ensure the rationale is properly substantiated.

In many cases, we just wasted the time of the person who wrote the program and charged the client higher fees for the review. We would rather be honest and let our clients know that it costs them less for us to perform the work, and they can do the final review.

It will save the client time and money.

How long is your food safety plan preparation timeline?

Our food safety plan is typically completed within 1 to 2 weeks depending on how busy we are.

What food safety plan can you help us prepare?

We build the HACCP plan, US FSMA plan and CFIA SFC PCP plan. We build food safety plans for various food products, including on-farm and post-farm, such as bakery, soy products, pet foods, animal foods, sauces, juices, ingredient manufacturing and many more.

Can you do a simple BC food safety plan?

Certainly, we also do BC food safety and sanitation plans for our restaurant clients. 99% of the food safety plan submitted to the health inspectors are accepted without required changes.

We Don’t Keep The Secret (and Client Forever), We Teach You

We literally teach you how to maintain your food safety management system. I have had clients who worked with a well-known food safety consultant who knew nothing about the program. She literally told me that she learned more with me weekly for 4 one-hour sessions.

We want to make sure you can handle the audit and CFIA inspections on your own while knowing that you are supported.

Please understand that by teaching you, we may lose you as a client but… that’s ok. We want to lose you when you are ready to be independent.
